Excellent observations! Few things can be more damaging to a manager / subordinate relationship than not only neglecting to provide clear expectations but then also criticizing the lack of accomplishment for those unstated expectations. Ongoing feedback - positive and constructive - is critical but, sadly, often absent. This is exactly why peer groups are so important for senior level positions and small business owners. With many organizations putting halts on hiring this is also a perfect time for them to focus on developing their workforces.
